On the well-posedness of the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation in two dimensions

چکیده
White noise-driven nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) of parabolic type are frequently used to model physical systems in space dimensions d = 1, 2, 3. Whereas existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to these equations are well established in one dimension, the situation is different for d ≥ 2. Despite their popularity in the applied sciences, higher dimensional versions of these SPDE models are generally assumed to be illposed by the mathematics community. We study this discrepancy on the specific example of the two dimensional Allen-Cahn equation driven by additive white noise. Since it is unclear how to define the notion of a weak solution to this equation, we regularize the noise and introduce a family of approximations. Based on heuristic arguments and numerical experiments, we conjecture that these approximations exhibit divergent behavior in the continuum limit. The results strongly suggest that shrinking the mesh size in simulations of the two-dimensional white noise-driven Allen-Cahn equation does not lead to the recovery of a physically meaningful limit.

Microscopic derivations of several Hamilton–Jacobi equations in infinite dimensions, and large deviation of stochastic systems
We consider Hamilton–Jacobi equations which characterize optimal controlled partial differential equations of the following types: the Allen–Cahn equation, the Cahn–Hilliard equation, a nonlinear Fokker–Planck equation, and aVlasov–Fokker–Planck equation. In each of the examples, the optimal control problem and its associated cost functional can be derived as limit from a microscopically define...
متن کاملThe existence of global attractor for a Cahn-Hilliard/Allen-Cahn equation
In this paper, we consider a Cahn-Hillard/Allen-Cahn equation. By using the semigroup and the classical existence theorem of global attractors, we give the existence of the global attractor in H^k(0
متن کاملOn the short time asymptotic of the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation
A description of the short time behavior of solutions of the Allen-Cahn equation with a smoothened additive noise is presented. The key result is that in the sharp interface limit solutions move according to motion by mean curvature with an additional stochastic forcing. This extends a similar result of Funaki [9] in spatial dimension n = 2 to arbitrary dimensions. Resumé On étudie le comportem...
متن کاملFinite Element Methods for the Stochastic Allen-Cahn Equation with Gradient-type Multiplicative Noise
This paper studies finite element approximations of the stochastic Allen–Cahn equation with gradient-type multiplicative noise that is white in time and correlated in space. The sharp interface limit—as the diffuse interface thickness vanishes—of the stochastic Allen–Cahn equation is formally a stochastic mean curvature flow which is described by a stochastically perturbed geometric law of the ...
متن کاملGlobal Solution to the Allen-cahn Equation with Singular Potentials and Dynamic Boundary Conditions
We prove well-posedness results for the solution to an initial and boundaryvalue problem for an Allen-Cahn type equation describing the phenomenon of phase transitions for a material contained in a bounded and regular domain. The dynamic boundary conditions for the order parameter have been recently proposed by some physicists to account for interactions with the walls (see [14] and [20]). We s...
